The Alsatia was a small vessel built in 1876 by D & W Henderson in Glasgow for the Anchor Line and was launched in January 1876. Her maiden voyage took her from Glasgow to Moville and New York. Her last trip along this route was in March of 1877 before switching to the London – New York service for 39 sailings. In 1886, it was refitted with two triple-expansion engines and double the passengers. Between 1882 and 1901 the ship made 57 Mediterranean voyages. Alsatia was sold in 1901 to Khedivial Mail and renamed Minieh. In 1914, she was sold to British Admiralty for use as a blockship.
