Built by A. Stephen & Sons in Glasggow the S.S. California was launched for the Anchor Line on the 12th of March 1872. Her first voyage was on June 15th that same year leaving Glasgow to Moville, Ireland, and New York staying on this route until 1878. From 1878-1882 she transferred to the London-New York service. Between 1882 and 1887 the S.S.California sailed along the Glasgow, Liverpool, Calcutta, and Bombay routes. Between 1888 and 1904 she sailed the Mediterranean – New York service. Her last voyage began on the 16th of February 1904 leaving Marseilles for Genoa, Naples, Palmero, and New York. In December of that year, she was scrapped in Genoa, Italy.
