S.S. Celtic

The S.S. Celtic was built for the White Star Line in 1901 by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and was launched April 4th, 1901. Her maiden voyage took place on July 26th, 1901 travelling from Liverpool to New York. In 1907, she was sold to the American Line and was used on their New York-Mediterranean service until 1914 when she was armed and converted into a British armed merchant cruiser. In 1916, she went back to the Liverpool to New York service for the White Star Line. In February 1917, she was mined in the Irish Sea and towed back to Liverpool for repairs. In March of 1918, she was torpedoed again in the Irish Sea and this time repaired in Belfast and again continued the Liverpool-New York route. In 1928 she wrecked on Roche’sPoint in Ireland fortunately without loss of life. She was demolished where she wrecked that same year.
