The Friedrich der Grosse vessel was built by A.G. Vulcan I 1896 for the North German Lloyd company of Bremen. She was launched on August 1st, 1896 and sailed her maiden voyage on November 11th, 1896 from Bremen to Australia. She started her first Italy to New York service in early 1907, which ended in 1912 for 16 total voyages. In 1914 she took refuge in New York and in April 1917 was seized by the U.S. Authorities and became Government ship Huron. In 1922, she went to the Los Angeles SS Company and was renamed City of Honolulu. While on her first L.A. to Honolulu voyage, she caught fire on October 12th, 1922 and was sunk by gunfire five days later by U.S. Transport ship Thomas as a danger of navigation.
