S.S. Mendoza


The S.S. Mendoza is a ship that has taken on many names. It's first name was the S.S. Maritzburg when it was launched in 1904 for the Bucknail LIne by Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Company in Newcastle England. In 1905, the line was sold to Lloyd Italiano and renamed S.S. Mendoza. From 1908-1913, the vessel was used along the New York-Napoli route. In 1914, the vessel was renamed S.S. Caserta after the city in the Campania Region of Italy. In 1915, it was used as a warship and was armed with two 3" guns. In 1918, she was used as a U.S. troop transport ship and attached to the Untied States Navy Cruiser and Transport Force. In 1919, the S.S. Caserta resumed passenger service under the Navigazione Generale Italiana for the New York service. In 1923, the vessel was renamed S.S. Venezuela and transferred to the La Veolce Navigazione for service betwen Italy and South America. She was scrapped in 1928.
