S.S. Prinzess Irene

The Prinzess Irene was launched June 19th, 1900 and started her maiden voyage September 9th, 1900 between Bremen, Southampton, Cherbourg, and New York. The ship was built by A.G. Vulcan for the Norddeutscher Lloyd company. Beginning April of 1903, she began sailings between Genoa, Naples, and New York. On April 6th, 1910 it was stranded at Long Island, New York and eventually refloated and repaired at Newport News. July 9th, 1914, she made her last voyage along Genoa, Naples, and New York where she took refuge until seized by the United States in April of 1917. She was renamed Pocahontas and used by the U.S. Government until 1921 when it was converted into a U.S. Mail steamer. That same year she was bought back by Norddeutscher Lloyd, towed to Germany, reconditioned and renamed Bremen to be used for the Bremen to New York service. Her named changed again in 1928 to Karlsruhe to allow the Bremen name to be used for a new express liner. On August 20th, 1932, she made her last voyage from Bremen to Galvestone and was scrapped in Bremerhaven that same year.
