Constructed in 1907 by Sir J. Laing & Sons Limited, the S.S San Giovanni was built for the Italian company Sicula Americana. The vessel was launched in June of 1907 and sailed her maiden voyage from Naples to Messina to Palermo, to New York on October 14th, 1907. In August of 1917, the company was bought by the Transoceanica Societa Italiana di Navigazione. On August 11th, 1921 she made her last Naples-New York trip before she was transferred to new ownership to Navigazione Generale Italiana who renamed her S.S. Palermo. She made a few more Naples to New York routes before being scrapped in 1928 in Italy.
