S.S. Umbria


The Umbria was built in 1884 by John Elder & Company in Glasgow for the Cunard SS Company. She was launched on Jun 26th, 1884 with her maiden voyage being later that same year traveling from Liverpool to Queenstown to New York. In 1890, she was rebuilt to haul more gross tonnage. In 1892, she arrived at the New York port with a broken shaft. After repair, she resumed the Liverpool to New York sailings in April of 1893 until 1900. Here last sailing was on February 12th, 1910 and she was scrapped later that same year.

Giuseppa Riggio (Born: 1867) along with her two children Rosa and Cirey Cancilla attempted to come to America on this vessel but were denied admission for unknown reasons. They made a second attempt a few months later and successfully arrived in the United States
