S.S. Vulcania


The Vulcania was built for the Cosulich Line in Monfalcone, Italy by Cantiere Navale Triestino in 1926. She was launched on December 18th, 1926 and sailed from Trieste to Patras to Naples to New York on her maiden voyage December 19th, 1928. In 1930, she was rebuilt to increase tonnage to 24,469 and fitted with new engines to increase her speed to 21 knots. In 1937, she was transferred to the newly formed Italia Line and continued the Trieste to New York Service until 1940. During World War II, it served as troopship and was used on three special missions. In 1946, she was chartered to the American Export Line to run between New York, Naples, and Alexandria until later that same year she was returned to the Italia Line. From 1947 to 1955, she ran the Genoa to Naples to New York service. In 1965, the Vulcania was sold to the Siosa Line and was also renamed Caribia. She was scrapped in Kaohsiung on March 15th, 1974.

Domenico Fragano (Born: 1903) and Wife Alessandrina Paragano left for Italy from the port of New York on July 10th, 1950 on this ship. After a 3 month visit, they returned back home to New Jersey on this same ship October 10th, 1950.
